Happy Thursday everyone!
In lieu of our usual Thursday community discussion post today, we wanted to share an update on the podcast portion of STRONGWILLED. One of the best parts of publishing our work on Substack is that we are able to engage in a variety of media formats — we can put in images, youtube clips, links, and more.
For almost 8 years, D.L. and Krispin hosted The Prophetic Imagination Station podcast, where they did deep dives into evangelical pop cultural artifacts of the 80s and 90s (including Adventures in Odyssey episodes, Frank Peretti Books, Christian romance, and more1). Now, they are transitioning The Prophetic Imagination Station into the STRONGWILLED podcast, which will focus on helping survivors of religious authoritarian parenting build autonomy and find community and solidarity with one another.
We are excited to have an audio component to the STRONGWILLED project. Starting today, you can listen to D.L.’s interview with Amber Cantorna-Wylde on the STRONGWILLED feed. If you already subscribed and followed to The Prophetic Imagination Station podcast, it should already be in your feed! You can read more about the podcast and subscribe wherever you normally listen to audio content here.
In July, episodes of STRONGWILLED the podcast will be released that offer a more informal, chatty, and personal look at the long-term impacts of religious authoritarian parenting. If you grew up in a high control religion (or love someone who did) we hope you subscribe and listen as we explore these topics together.
Publishing our research on Substack and producing a podcast at the same time takes energy, time, and financial support. If you believe in our content , here are a few ways you can support our work:
You can support us financially here on Substack, or on Patreon. Substack subscribers get commenting privileges, weekly discussion threads, once a month paid subscriber posts — and soon, access to online workshops and community building activities.
Patreon subscribers get access to once a month subscriber only podcasts where D.L. and Krispin share more candidly about their lives and their research (plus access to a back catalogue of hundreds of episodes).
You can also help us by sharing about this project on social media, by signing up for our email newsletters, and subscribing to the STRONGWILLED podcast.
And in the spirit of solidarity, we wanted to share a few more audio resources we love.
First is the podcast I Hate James Dobson, hosted by two therapists (one who grew up with Dobson, one who knows nothing about him). It is funny, cathartic, and it goes through various books that Dobson wrote so you can get a sense of just how wild these parenting resources are.
Secondly is the podcast Focus on Your Own Family by Stephanie Jo Warren. This is a great way to listen to other survivors, here their stories, and maybe even process a bit of your own background in the process.
We are so incredibly grateful to the people who have supported us and have made this work possible. And we are so glad to be able to offer ad-free podcasts and to be able to publish our research on religious authoritarian parenting without having to charge people money, thanks to the generosity of others. This is a grassroots movement of survivors and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Take care of yourselves this weekened, and happy listening!
Most of our Prophetic Imagination Station episodes are still available to find on the internet, so if any of these topics interest you go check them out!
I was listening to your Ties that Bind season all of yesterday, a fun and enraging time. I had truly not reckoned with the way spooooky Consequences are touted in Odyssey for going against ‘design’/traditions without any explicit causational relation. The most egregious was the dying aids patient - they can’t address what the actual situation is- simply a consequence of some vague action.
