Hello, and welcome to the Thursday community discussion post for STRONGWILLED.

What do you think a therapist should know about religious authoritarian parenting?

On Monday, we released a podcast episode (and summary post) discussing some of the basics of religious authoritarian parenting. We talked about the goals of this kind of parenting, how religion was used, and the developmental impacts. We hope it’s a helpful resource for survivors, their loved ones, as well as anyone who wants to support individuals who grew up under this kind of parenting.

Generally speaking, there’s been very little research in understanding this kind of upbringing, or regarding childhood indoctrination in general.1 We believe that it’s vital to hear from those who’ve lived through it, as we move forward in understanding the impacts of RAP and discerning the various paths of recovery.
