We’ve found that an important part of a project about religious authoritarian parenting is to take periodic breaks — for us as writers/researchers, and for you as readers. So we’re taking the week off for some summer fun.
This project has been running just four months, and we’ve already covered several topics regarding religious authoritarian parenting:
We defined the term itself
Talked about the church system that promoted it
Discussed the political landscape it was formed in
Summarized the promises it made to parents
Talked about what it’s like to grow up in a culture war
Examined why the patriarchy loves Mother’s Day
Compared Dobson to others of his same time period, like Mr. Rogers
We’ve talked about how this movement treated both toddlers and teenagers
And we’ve had two wonderful guests: Amber Cantorna-Wylde and Chrissy Stroop
And we started digging deeper into the history of this movement (and particular James Dobson), which is what we’ll continue to explore this month.
We’re beginning to prepare for this fall, when we’ll be talking about at length about the parent/child dynamics, and what happens to those relationships as children grow into adults and try to navigate their relationship with their parents.
Next week, we’ll launch the first episode of the STRONGWILLED podcast, titled “Send this Episode to Your Therapist,” the first of a series of episodes geared toward explaining the psychological significance of growing up under this kind of parenting.
But for this week, we hope you take a little break (or catch up on any posts you missed along the way). We’ll be back next Monday, but in the meantime, feel free to share with us what taking a break looks like for you!
As always, thank you so much for supporting this project. See you next week!
