Hello STRONGWILLED community,

It’s been a minute since we had a community discussion post around here.

We, like everyone else, are in the thick of processing the pain of our childhoods while living through all the unprecedented times. And the truth is, it is all connected. Authoritarian parenting practices lead to populations that vote authoritarian. The personal is political, as many of us know intimately in our nervous systems.

As we continue to put out content (right now doing our Hunger Games miniseries, and working on upcoming chapters about abuse, developmental delays, and gender and sexuality) we want to continue to cultivate a space for folks to do their own processing. Eventually, we hope to work towards an oral histories project that centers the voices of people who were raised evangelical with religious authoritarian parenting methods. We believe that helping people process the pain of their pasts can help us to be more grounded and in-line with our values in the present.

With this in mind, we will be posting a series of bi-monthly reflection prompts aimed at helping folks begin the process of looking back at their experiences of being a child in a religious authoritarian setting.

Today’s prompt is this:

What media did you have access to in childhood that modeled resistance against authoritarianism? As a child, teenager, or young adult, what was your relationship with the idea of an oppressive government or authoritarian power tried to control your actions, thoughts, or beliefs?
